Sometimes I get a little unmotivated and I find it hard to get myself to do some work. Working for myself, there are times when I get so immersed in the day to day work, I find myself losing a bit of direction and motivation. Being responsible for so many things gets a little overwhelming. So here are a few things that help me to get the excitement and drive back:
Make a list
I make it a priority to make a to-do list at the beginning of the week. Every time a new request/task comes up, no matter how small, I add that to the list. It’s a great feeling to cross items off the list and when I look back at the end of the week, I have a great sense of achievement that I’ve managed to do so many things.
Take a Break
When I feel overwhelmed by it all, I make a conscious effort to spend a couple of hours/days with my family where I won’t be interrupted by work. I make sure that my emails are set up with an auto respond to explain that I’m unavailable but I’ll respond by a certain date. My clients all know my phone number so they’ll call there if it’s an urgent matter. By taking the time off, it helps put things into perspective for me and reminds me of why I do what I do.
Have Some Quiet Time
I have nights where I find it difficult to sleep because there are so many things going through my head. To help me wind down, I read a book. Something completely non-business related. I also go to a yoga class, or do some meditation at home just to get my mind to settle down.
Surround Yourself with Inspiration
So I don’t forget what I’m working for, I surround myself with images of the reasons why I work so hard. I have pictures of my family, people I want to help, pictures of places I want to visit on holiday and a house with a walk-in wardrobe. These are the dreams that I would never be able to achieve if I don’t work my ass off.
It makes me wonder how other people get themselves motivated. I’d love to hear how everyone gets out of the rut that we sometimes get stuck in.
