Have you ever brought your kids to work with you?

Running my own business, I’m very lucky that I get to work from home, sleep in until 8am and spend time with my son. I’m also thankful that I can take him to my office without having to ask anyone for permission. But after today, I wonder if it’s a little selfish of me to do it. Yeah, sure, he gets looked after by his own mum, but it must be hard for the little guy to come into a boring office with nothing to do and being told to be quiet every time I was on the phone.

I did think about dropping him off at my dad’s so that he could at least have more space to run around in. But when I asked him if he wanted to go to Lolo’s (Filipino for grandfather), the little bugger said “I want to go to Mummy’s work”. Argh. Be careful what you wish for, little buddy…

Since I knew that we were going to be there for a while, I brought a couple of toys that he could play with to keep him occupied. I also secretly brought the Nintendo DS as a backup plan when said toys failed to entertain. I brought 2 sandwiches and an apple for the little garbage disposal (which he polished off within 20 minutes of us arriving). There was even a planned break where we could go outside, have lunch and spend some time together. Predictably, as soon as we walked in, all he wanted to do was play on my laptop. Fan-tas-tic.

The rest of the day was then spent in 20 minute blocks of productivity, 10-15 minutes of pacifying a 4 year old with cabin fever, then back to 20 minutes of working. As frustrated as I was about the fact that I wasn’t getting through as many items on my to-do list as I had planned, it must have been even more frustrating for my son to have to be quiet at certain times, especially when he was so obviously bursting at the seams to tell me about the “friends” he had on the game that he was playing.

So, as much as I would love to spend every Friday with my little boy, I feel a little bad that I can’t give him the full attention that he craves. Is it unfair to bring him along with me to work or should I just be better prepared next time?

Oh, one good thing about having him along? He remembered that we parked on level “pink 3”. The last time I was in that parking lot, I spent 10 minutes walking around looking like an idiot because I didn’t take note of where I parked.

So have you ever taken your kids to work with you either out of necessity or voluntarily? I’d love to hear how the day went and what you did to keep them occupied so I can try them myself.
